Newberry National Volcanic Monument is a fascinating place. I know because while my husband, Paul, was on the Forest Service staff there, I volunteered at Lava Lands Visitor Center, twelve miles south of Bend, Oregon. We did this for eight summers from 1991 through 1998, a special time when the park was an exciting brand new monument.
Then in 1999, Paul was assigned to do the Interpretive Programs inside the Newberry Caldera and I went with him. We lived in a small cabin inside the caldera and gave talks to park visitors about the geology, history and archaeology of the area. It was a wondrous time for us personally and professionally and I share that with you in the pages of this book.

Wow, just wow. I learned some fascinating information from this book. My husband and I have visited the Newbury Crater twice. It is always delightful to read about a place you have visited and compare your memories to the author’s description, but Evelyn Findley has gone much deeper than what the casual tourist sees on a trip to the crater.

In this book, Evelyn gives us behind-the-scenes stories of working as a Forest Service volunteer while her husband Paul was employed by the Forest Service. I absolutely loved the fact that they moved into their Forest Service home when it was still snowed in and their furniture needed to be delivered in the bucket of a loader. What courage and love it took for her to move into the wilds of snow country with her husband!

Evelyn’s explanation of the archeological digs on the site was fascinating. I had no idea that humans had lived in Oregon nearly 10,000 years ago. She tells about the artifacts found at the site and how those artifacts were used to reconstruct the daily lives of those ancient people.

This book is a rewarding read for anybody interested in the early history of the North American West. Be certain to read it before you visit the Newbury Crater. Evelyn gives the reader an appreciation for the area that only someone who has lived in the area many summers can share. This is also an excellent resource for school children studying Oregon history or geology.

History Under the Ash edition by Evelyn Findley Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

This book was very informative and interesting, evelyn is so talented, what a life she has led. I was so moved by how she met her husband, and how he proposed.
I have been to Central Oregon and the Newberry Caldera many times and was amazed at the history of the area.
I had the pleasure of attending lectures and demonstrations at both Lava Lands and Newberry while Paul and Evelyn Findley were there. I remember all too itchily the clouds of mosquitoes at Newberry. Paul taught science before "retiring" to another twenty years of teaching at national parks. Even when he worked as a janitor/handyman, he almost usually knew more than the rest of the staff.
Evelyn's displays at Lava Lands were particularly interesting as she talked about the lives of the prehistoric people who lived in the area--what they ate, how they cooked, what they wore, even how they made shoes.
These are the stories of Paul and Evelyn's life as teachers and lovers of nature and history.
What a lovely, easy-reading, and densely packed treasure this little book is. For those who are familiar with the fascinating geological and ancient cultural history of the central Oregon region this book will be a lovely reminder. For those who are not familiar, read Evelyn's book for a great introduction. There are plenty of facts about what happened when, with photos to accompany them, but there is nothing pedantic here. It's all presented in a way that is gentle and warm and enthusiastic and interesting and personal. If you haven't been to Newberry Crater you will want to go and if you have been you will want to go back. One of the aspects of "History Under the Ash" that I find particularly refreshing is that finally someone is taking an interest in the lives of women in ancient times, not just those of the men. Evelyn documents current thinking on the activities and creative contributions of the women who lived in Oregon's pre-history. There is also a very tempting bibliography to further one's knowledge. I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in Oregon's volcanic history and the lives of Oregon's ancient inhabitants.
This book is about a civilization that lived in central Oregon some 9500 years ago. What was it like to be a woman 10,000 years ago. How would you cook by dropping hot rocks into a basket of liquid with tongs made of willow bark. Right at the end of the ice age, Central was a damper climate more like the Wilamette Valley is today. There were plenty of animals, roots and seeds for an excellent diet, but then disaster struck when Mt Mazama erupted and laid three feet of hot ash over central Oregon, killing all plants and animals and turning it into the dryer climate it is today. Soon there were other eruptions in the Newberry area and no indication of life there for a long time. Some trees may have survived, but nothing else. That ash also covered and preserved 100 pair of sage brush bark sandals these people left behind in ft rock cave that you see in Museums today. That eruption of Mt Mazama created Crater Lake, Oregon's only National Park. This little book is full of pictures and facts. Enjoy!
